Fighting Games with Female Characters

There is a lot of fighting games with female characters in community. I will list some in this blogpost and ones that I love. Of course, there are a handful of female fighters with males in games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Guilty Gear. What about fighting games that feature all girl cast. There is SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy which is the black sheep of The King of Fighters series and poorly received by critics. I am guessing SNK wants some fanservice and stray away from hardcore mainline KOF game. Speaking of fanservice, there is a fighting that features it like Dead or Alive and another title I will list. Anyways, Lets get right to the list of all-female fighting games that are bold and beautiful.
Arcana Heart – Team Arcana/Examu
Arcana Heart is a fighting game developed by Examu/Team Arcana that was released on August 22, 2007. The plot is about maidens who magically abilities to see spirits and fight alongside of them. One maiden, Heart Aino on a mission to stop Mildred Avallone from merging Elemental and real world into one. Throughout the course of the series, storyline changes and different protagonists like Petra Johanna Lagerkvist and Weiss. In gameplay, each character has their moveset and arcana abilities. You can air dash, perform combos and change stage from elemental/real world. Due to the success of the first game, there were sequels, a manga and merchandise. I really wanted a anime of the game.

Why do people hate this game? I don’t understand why but this is one of the first all-female fighting game I owned. Sadly, creator Toru Sakurai passed away and there is some unfinished character Omega has yet to be in the game. The other two dlc characters Dark Heart and Pristrix were finished. These two appeared in the new update of Arcana Heart Love Max Six Stars Xtend. It doesn’t stop there, Heart Aino appeared in Blazblue Cross Tag and NitroPlus Blasterz Heroines Infinite Duel. If you want to check out Arcana Hearts, its available PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
Asuka 120% – Fill-in-Café
Asuka 120% is a fighting game developed by Fill-in-Café and released on March 11,1994. The plot is about a school club martial arts tournament called “Club Rivalry Budget Contest Mega Fight”. Those who compete in order to keep their club active and increase their budget. Those who lost will have to shut down, there is one school club. Chemistry club which performs poorly last year but president Tetsuko Ogigaya enlist main protagonist Asuka Honda to win and defeat other students from each club. In gameplay, each character has movesets along with super moves that can be built up just like Garou Mark of the Wolves. Characters can perform clashes and air combos in each match.

Asuka 120% features students from Sports, Dance and Journalism clubs with different fighting styles. This game is still being played at Frosty Faustlings and other local tournaments. Note: there is a new Asuka 120% in the works called “EXALLENT”. I am excited to see a trailer for it this year or not. It was announced at EVO Japan in 2024 and if you want to buy it. Asuka 120% is available only in Japan for PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Pc-Engine and more. I have played it on a emulator and it was fun.
Variable Geo – Giga
Variable Geo is a fighting game developed by Giga and released in 1993. The plot is a Martial Arts Tournament to determine who is the strongest woman in the world. Winner gets a cash prize and restate but loser must perform embarrassing acts in front of the whole world. Main protagonist Yuka Takeuchi works at restaurant as a waitress. She joins the tournament to face strong opponents like Ryu from Street Fighter. In Variable Geo, there are different characters with different goals on winning the tournament. Gameplay wise, it just like Street Fighter with movesets and super moves. This is only fighting game with fanservice no mend for children under 18.

Due to the success, there is an OVA adaptation (where Jun Kubota’s voice actor Kathryn Feller followed me on Instagram). While I was blogging before the pandemic before I quit to try again. Sequels and spin off series called V.G. Neo featuring a new protagonist. Variable Geo is still played at Frosty Faustlings too like Asuka 120%. If you want to buy DVD along with game, visit Amazon to claim it.
Tokidensho Angel Eyes – Tecmo

Tokidensho Angel Eyes is a fighting game developed by Tecmo and released in June 1996. Tecmo also brought you Dead or Alive series along with featuring 2D and 3D sprites. There is no plot of this game but might be a tournament. Characters are consisting of biker girl, ninja, schoolgirl and android with different movesets. Players can perform air combos; hover jumps and super moves. I remember playing this game on Fightcade (Arcade) and it was fun. 2D and 3D felt out of place at times but nothing else. Tokidensho Angel Eyes is available on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and more.
SkullGirls – Reverge Labs
Skullgirls is a fighting game developed by Reverge Labs and released on April 10, 2012. The plot is about artifact called “The Skull Heart” which allows to grant a individual a single wish. If this wish impure that woman will become a undead monster called “Skullgirl”. In gameplay, its reminiscing to Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes along with mechanics. Players are allow to choose up to 3 characters during select screen. Each characters have unique moves and combos, along with assist (which players can customize). Skullgirls offers online play, tutorials and story mode to explore each character journey. I got my hands on the game and found myself enjoying it so far before COVID hit. There were some issues like infinite combos and lack of character during launch. Later on, they added new characters like Annie, Umbrella, Black Dahlia and Big Band.

In 2023, there was a patch that alternate and toning down depictions of racism and several illustrations being removed. It first, I didn’t like the change but understand some people on board with it. Anyways, if you want to still buy SkullGirls, its available on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Mobile and more.
