What is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a remake of 2000s video game on PlayStation 1. The game is developed by Square Enix and apart of Dragon Quest franchise. Game’s plot revolves around main protagonists who lives in Estard along with his childhood friend’s Kiefer and Maribel. The trio finds colored tablets and gets transported into new world or island. Together, they save villages and fight off monsters of darkness. I have played the demo, and the length was 4 hours long plus level grinding. Who are the characters you might ask, well there is Hero. Hero lives with his mother and fisherman father in Pilchard village. Kiefer is a prince of Estard and hungry for adventure. While Maribel is the mayor’s daughter and very bossy around two MCs. Demo begins went Kiefer and Hero are in a cave of Pilchard.
Hero helps him fisherman dad and gets summons by the King of Estard. Kiefer goes to a shrine and tells Hero that he uncovers a tablet from his castle along other items. He tries to present them to the statue but fails. Suddenly, statue speaks and tells out heroes to complete trials along with collecting colored tablets to open the gate. Kiefer and Hero goes around Estard to collect tablet pieces and meet up with Dormat for the key to trials. Hero and Kiefer complete the trials by fighting shadow creatures along with acquiring pieces of yellow tablet. Main protagonist and Kiefer make their way back to the shrine then greeted by Maribel. Hero agrees to let Marbel tag along on their quest.
New Island Epic Adventure
Three major characters meet a bat-like creature talking about putting pieces of tablet together and what going on. As Hero, puts yellow pieces of the tablet together at the temple. Three is transported into island called “BallyMolloy” named after a hero who fought monsters. Hero, Maribel and Kiefer meet a warrior named Meave (later on turns out to be a monster trying to destroy Marlloy). In BallyMolloy, three main characters meet Patrick and tell them to get green gem to save his dad. Three goes to the mines with Meave to retrieve the green gem. Meave wanted to stay behind, and trio goes back to Marlloy for Patrick. Patrick’s dad recovers and tells them to go to a tower. The party agrees and, in the tower, they fight off a golem and crab.
Meave revealed to be true culprit behind the kidnapping of woman and destruction of Marlloy village. Hero, Kiefer and Maribel defeats Meave and saves Mallory village. After saying good bye to Patrick and returning to their world. Kiefer and Hero find other missing pieces of tablet along with a new island appearing. Trio boards Maribel’s father’s old ship to newly Mallory to find other pieces of tablet. After getting pieces from Hero’s uncle and Dormat’s old friend, main protagonists go back to temple. That’s how demo ends, in my opinion, Square Enix has done amazing job with this reimagining of 2000s Dragon Quest series. Battle system is very simple with attacks, items, tactics and skills. Hexadrive handled the development of the game along with building up from scratch.
Dragon Quest Vii Reimagined Demo Impressions
Although, there is a 2013 remake with a shorten length but its 2026 now. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo was cup of tea for me. Due to easy combat mechanics and level grinding in dungeons. Unreal Engine 4 brings out character’s quirk and eye-popping landscapes. Overworld, allows players to attack monsters and causes them to be stunned for short period of time. Each party member has “let loose” abilities, for example Hero can use Ocean Protection to shield enemies’ attack. Kiefer can raise his critical hit and his defense. Maribel can exploit weakness using elemental attacks. Also, each character can equip items and weapons based on their classes. While in towns, you can go to church to save, purification and exp status.
Of course, there are shops and inn, while on your journey. Also, you fight bosses along the way in your quest. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined makes it easy for beginners to complete objectives, for example, world shows players where to go next. Which I like so far along with fixed camera system. Players are allowed to switch voices to English to Japanese cast based on their preference. The game opens doors to newer possibilities of someone who doesn’t play a lot of Dragon Quest games. Your favorite people is still behind development is late Akira Toryiama, Yuji Horii and Kochi Sugiyama still presented. Soundtrack is very adventurous and iconic to listen to. Dragon Quest series has been around since Final Fantasy series.
Closing
DQ characters have been in Super Smash Bros Ultimate and had a musou games with different heroes. There is an anime based called “Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai” along with a CGI movie called “Dragon Quest: Your Story”. Dragon Quest Vii Reimagined is a breath of fresh air for me as JRPG fan. I can see myself buying full version of the game went price drop but right now it is $59.99. If you want to play demo before release date February, 5, 2025, go for it. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a new take of an epic adventure to restore the world.
