Is it Canon – Princess Peach and Rosalina Sisters?

Princess Peach and Rosalina
Princess Peach is a central character in Super Mario Bros series who is the damsel-in-distress that Mario Bros has to save from Bowser. Peach is the princess of Mushroom Kingdom and only human that takes residents in the overworld. She also goes by the name Princess Toadstool in 1989 video game. In the earlier games Peach personality sweet and caring for others. While her movie counterpart is determined and brave, do whatever it takes to protect her subjects.
While video game main antagonist King Koopa (Bowser) keeps kidnapping Peach for unknown reasons. Mario is tasked to defeat Bowser and rescue Peach, also restoring land of Mushroom Kingdom. Peach role changes throughout the series, from damsel to heroine, she was playing in Super Mario Bros 2 (1998) to help Mario defeat Wart. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996?) went she assist Mario to defeat Smitty. Also, she is the protagonist of her own game Super Princess Peach (2005) and Princess Peach Showtime (2024).
Princess Rosalina
Princess Rosalina is another major character in Super Mario Galaxy, who resides in Comet Observatory and caretaker of star-like Lumas. Rosalina assists Mario in defeating Bowser after she steals Princess Peach’s castle. She also has a backstory about losing her mother and feeling lonesome. Lumas came to join her, and she build a house that became Comet Observatory. Rosalina is not like Peach in any way. She was not created by Shigeru Miyamoto, but Yoshiaki Koizumi did.
Koizumi wanted a deeper and sadder story about Rosalina along Lumas so that players will understand her presence. Rosalina appeared in Super Mario Galaxy, 3D World and Odyssey along with other games. There were hints that Peach and Rosalina were sisters during the development of Super Mario Galaxy. Even if design is very similar to each other but got cut from final story.
Sisters?
In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026), it was revealed that Peach and Rosalina are sisters. In beginning of movie, Rosalina reads a picture book to Lumas just like original game illustrating what happens to Princess Peach. Also, predicts that Mario will come to save her again just like last movie. We get another backstory is Peach and Rosalina has cosmic powers. Also, we get to see how Princess Peach came to the Mushroom Kingdom and toads raise her.
In my opinion, I had made a backstory about how Princess Peach came to the Mushroom Kingdom (video below), feel free to check it out. Anyways, Bowser Jr kidnaps Rosalina to power his Doomsday cannon to take over the universe. During the climax of the film, Peach saves Rosalina but hand contact, destroying Doomsday cannon in the process.
Is it Canon
Ending the film, Peach introduces Mario to Rosalina and rebuilt Mushroom Kingdom (which is a reference to Rosalina backstory in building Observatory, along with Mario Maker). I would say it’s not canon but movie universe only. Even Shigeru and Koizumi did mention about adding it but didn’t make the final version. Both of them show great combat expertise went fighting against adversaries. Peach and Rosalina were born on the moon at the same time.
Rosalina had to protect her sister and send her into the warp pipe. I am guessing evil forces wanted to take Rosalina’s powers along with Peach’s as well. Both of them as same design but have different roles in mainline games. Rosalina is watching over the cosmos, while Peach watches over the Kingdom. In the movie, I love how both female characters are girl bosses instead of unless weaklings.
Thoughts
I am no expert on Super Mario lore, but this is something I have to talk about in the future. After credits, Daisy appears after stopping Ukiki from robbing others at Gateway Galaxy. How Daisy is related to Peach and Rosalina? Anya Taylor-Joy and Brie Larson did a great job voicing these characters. Even second animated Mario movie throw way too many easter eggs at you but I really enjoyed the film overall.
Jack Black stated about third movie, may see more Rosalina and Peach backstory. Who knows if that will happen in the future. In my opinion, it felt out of place for Peach just learn about magical power in the end because it was shoehorned. We just learn now, they’re sisters, I mean it was little information about that. Peach could have talk about her family in second movie and Rosalina.
Closing
Peach could have told Mario during her birthday, “I wish knew what my real family is, like yours Mario” or Lumas would say “Rosalina did you have parent?”.Rosalina would reply, “I didn’t know who happen to my family”. I would think they both should have a locket or something like a birthmark that reminds me if they are sisters. They needed to explore that more about it has half-hearted. That being said, I don’t think they are sisters but far from it. Their parents might be a descendant of Star human-like race that created the Lumas.
