What is Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is an online multiplayer team-based shooter developed by NetEase Games and released on December 6, 2024. The plot is about Dr Doom and his 2099 variant causes timestream entanglement that cause characters from Marvel Universe to battle each other. That’s what inspiration from the game came from Marvel 2099 comic franchise. This game was released the same day as Infinity Nikki (if you want to read my review). Marvel and NetEase want the piece of that team-based shooter pie as well. Months before released, there was a closed beta for PC users. At the time, my pc can’t handle the game and seen others enjoy it. In December, I managed to get a hands-on experience on Marvel Rivals. I will give my thoughts on it, toward end of the article.
Marvel Rivals kept the traditional 6vs6, while Overwatch downgraded from 5vs5. The game got over 33 playable characters from X-Men to Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. While Overwatch has 41 characters with different classes like tank, support and damage. Rivals have different classes as well like vanguard, strategist and more. Each character has different abilities and team up perks. Along with maps from futuristic Marvel Universe such as Wakanda, Asgard and more. The battle is overseen by Galacta (daughter of Galactus) and give you tips during tutorials. There are different game modes such as quick match, conquest and ranked. Players can home their skills in practice mode like targeting range and face off against AI.
Better than Overwatch
While Overwatch is currently successful before Marvel Rivals, the game has its fanbase. Whether you are capturing the objective and escorting payload. Rivals is different than OW, while it got same game modes as Overwatch. The cinematics before and after match, keeps players wanting more. What about battle pass? I don’t know Rivals will follow same format as other free to play games monetization method. You can buy cosmetics with in-game currently or real money. Players can review stats, highlights and progression activity in game. There are tournaments and I can’t wait to see them in the future. Overwatch is balanced in terms of support and damage heroes, while Rivals felt that certain characters are overpower than others. Based on the feedback of streamers and gamers I have talk too.
Rivals features destructive environments and a lot of characters to master. Each characters have passive abilities and combos that players can explore. Marvel Rivals was the most streamed on Twitch during released. NetEase stated that Marvel Rivals has over 10 million downloads and players in 72 hours. There are clips on TikTok, Instagram and many other social media platforms. Of course, there will be content creator during videos on YouTube. They did a Marvel Rivals content creator application, which I signed up for. I am still waiting for them to respond to me. There is some backlash on disparagement content creators for reviewing the game negatively called by retired Overwatch pro player Seagull. NetEase apologized and making the contract more content friendly.
Thoughts on Marvel Rivals
After playing Marvel Rivals, I feel in love with it. My favorite was Squirrel Girl, The Punisher, Psylocke and many more. I really hate Jeff the Shark because that thing is annoying. Anyways, this game is very addicting and fun indeed. I felt great went I get rewards and leveling as well. There will be some coming patches and nerfing on some characters along the way. I want to see more content and thing happening in the future. If you are a Marvel fan, I recommended this game. NetEase also did Marvel Duel and Marvel Super War. Marvel Games Jay Ong stated that “its most ambitious game development projects”. I agree with that statement and Marvel will make a lot of money from this. After countless hours and playing with other streamers, I must give it 8/10 rating.
