One Piece Bartholomew Kuma’s Backstory
One Piece Batholomew Kuma is a tragic and well written throughout manga and anime. In One Piece Egghead arc episodes 1129-1138, we get to explore Jewelry Bonney and Bartholomew Kuma backstory. Bartholomew was born with Buccaneer blood which he and his family were sold to slavery. Kuma’s dad tells stories about Nika, who is a legendary hero and his mother passing away. His dad also did Nika dance and was executed in the process. While in his 20s, Batholomew become a loving priest in Sorbet Kingdom and living with Ginny. Kuma also join Revolutionary Army with Dragon and Emporio Ivankov in his prime. Batholomew eats the Paw-Paw Fruit, which he can use to teleport and use air to push enemies. During his time in Sorbet Kingdom, King Bekori’s soldiers’ ties to enslave the townspeople.
Kuma fights back against King Bekori and earns him a wanted poster. Also, both Ginny and Kuma were thrown in prison for going against the king. In Sorbet Kingdom’s church, Ginny purpose to Kuma into marriage but he refuses because his past. King Bekori burns down Sobert town and Kuma’s defeats him. Batholomew is now new king of Sobert Kingdom and found out that Ginny was kidnapped by Celestial Dragons. Batholomew Kuma joins up with Dragon and Ivankov to find out where Ginny is taken. Days later, Kuma receives a call from Ginny on a boat with newborn Jenny. Ginny stated that she is dying and doesn’t want Kuma to look for her. Kuma rushes to find her at Sobert church where she is lying dead on the floor.
Bonny and Kuma’s Family Story
While Ginny passed away, there was an infant Bonney crying on the church’s floor. Kuma picks her up and vows to take care of Bonney for Ginny. Time passes, Bonney inherits the same disease called Sapphire Stones as Ginny, which is unable to go outside, night and day. Kuma finds a cure for Sapphire stones and luckily Dragon got a tip about Dr. Vegapunk. While Kuma and Bonney spend time together doing Nika dance along with eating Pizza. Kuma journeys to see Vegapunk’s lab, which he is willing to become a weapon to save Bonney. Saturn purposes that Kuma shouldn’t see her and will be placed under World Government surveillance. Kuma agrees and Saturn sends a CP8 agent named Alpha who acts as a nurse.
Bonney has a bad feeling about her and saddens that she didn’t receive any letter from Kuma. Sobert Kingdom’s helps Bonney escape, and she uses Age-Age fruit to defeat Alpha. Bonney sails with her grew to find Bartholomew Kuma. Kuma is not part of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and watches Monkey D. Luffy. While Kuma is very grateful of Vegapunk saving his daughter Bonney and doing it for a good cost. He is happy to see Bonney and Dragon’s Luffy changing the world for the better. Kuma believes in Nika and he becomes a pacifist PX-0 cyborg at the very end. Fast forward to past time, Bonney is in the cutches of Jaygarcia Saturn and reveals that he is the one that gave Ginny Sapphire Stones.
Present Time Kuma
PX-0 Kuma rushes to defeat Marines to save Bonney. Kizaru gives Luffy food and Bonney is on the verge of execution. Kuma punches Saturn as Bonney cries on the ground. Next episode 1138 will wrap up Kuma and Bonney storyline. In my opinion, we get why Kuma was made into a cyborg and become a warlord. Kuma doesn’t like violence and wanted to live a peaceful life. Ginny and Kuma make a good couple in the end. In Kuma’s eyes, we get to see Straw-Hat Pirates along with other characters in backstory. I saw that Bonney will become Nika like Gear 5 Luffy in the manga later on. World Government is very shady group and willing to sacrifice lives for their purpose. Last Sunday, I was catching up on latest One Piece anime episodes and never been on edge of my seat.
Toei Animation did amazingly well for these episodes and made me cry at the same time. I normally don’t care about backstories in One Piece but this one touches my heart. Kuma is willing to sacrifice everything to save his daughter. Batholomew Kuma goes down one of the best anime dads out there. One Piece ever ceases to amaze me as an anime watcher along with manga reader. I can’t wait for anime to conclude Egghead arc and next one will be even better. Eiichiro Oda did stated that One Piece is headed in final saga soon. One of the big three manga is finally going to end after 20+years. Who knows what will happen in the ending of One Piece?
Closing
Egghead story is personally one of my favorite sagas of One Piece of all time. Wano is up there as well because introduction of Gear 5 Nika Luffy with Tex Avery style animation. I remember internet was trending on new Gear 5 form with meme along with fan art. Bonney might be next to get Nika but guessing Age-Age Fruit is one of god devil fruits like Gum-Gum Fruit.
