Sonic Games Ranked
In this article, there is some sonic games that will be ranked from best to worst. These are the sonic games that I have played throughout the years. I want to get this out the way, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Forces that I will never touch due to poor reception and criticism. There are walkthroughs and let’s plays on these games. I almost forgot about Sonic 06 and Black Knight, which was bad, glad I didn’t play them. There are some decent sonic games like Sonic Lost Worlds, Seven Rings and Superstars. I have to get Sonic Superstars sooner or later because it reminds me of Super Mario Bros Wii U with 4 players. Anywho, I will mention some other games toward end of the post. Let’s get the very best Sonic game of all time coming in first.
Sonic Adventure 2 – Best
Sonic Adventure 2 is one of the greatest sonic games of all time and my favorite. I remember getting this game on Sega Dreamcast back in early 2000s. The game introduces Shadow the Hedgehog and one of my favorite characters in Sonic universe. Shadow is the anti-sonic and has the power of chaos. He is created my Dr. Eggman grandfather along with eclipse cannon which sets to destroy the world. Shadow has a backstory about his relationship with Maria Robotnik and G.U.N took over the project. SA2 has playable characters like its predecessor along with playing Shadow the Hedgehog. Also, they have Chao Garden, multiple stories and 2 player multiplayer. Due to the success of Sonic Adventure 2, there is season of Sonic X that adapts the whole story.
Also, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 2024 movie uses elements from SA 2 as well. I would recommend watching the movie and read my review. What can I say about Sonic Adventure? The soundtrack is amazing especially Pumpkin Hill, Sonic vs Shadow battle 2 and City Escape. Story is amazing feat and prefect balance in gameplay with challenging levels along with bosses. That’s all I have to say about it. Sonic Adventure 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 4/5, GameCube, Dreamcast and Xbox. Let’s go to the worst Sonic game I played.
Sonic Colors Ultimate – Worst
I have recently got this game for free in March 2025 for PlayStation Plus Essential plan. Let’s just say that I was disappointed in the game. Well, there was so many act in a zone because older Sonic games has acts 1-3 than a boss fight. In Colors, there is acts 1-6 plus boss, In my opinion, I didn’t like that one bit. It felt jarring to me and some acts have shorter level. Although, Sonic Colors offers enhanced gameplay with Wisps, which are tiny alien that transform sonic to adapt to certain environments. Some wisp can shortcut through levels like a breeze in the wind. That’s why Eggman wants them to fire his cannon to destroy the earth. Tails assist you in the game as well and replace extra life from regular games.
I had the tripping that sonic does along with lazy designs of bosses. This has to be the most half-baked sonic games I ever played. There was some bugs and glitches during Starlight Carnival. Sonic disappeared after getting hit by an enemy and I was befuddled by this. I stopped playing and never looked back. Don’t get me wrong, I love the soundtrack but got a weak story. I know some people will enjoy this game but other will not. Sonic Colors Ultimate is available on Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC. Let’s move to the worst sonic game I played.
Knuckle Chaotix – Worst
Knuckle Chaotix goes down one of the worst sonic games out there. Although, this introduces Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon and Charmy the Bee, who is team Chaotix in Sonic Heroes. In gameplay, you have to tether to boost your partner to get through the level. I played this on Sega 32X emulator and didn’t like it. This game has 5 acts along with boss fight. Instead of Sonic stopping Robotnix, there is Knuckles and Team Chaotix. Each character has abilities like Vector (boost), Charmy (fly) and Espio (climb), which was the same concept in Sonic Heroes. Knuckle Chaotix is available now on Sega 32X. Let’s go to very last best Sonic game is.
Sonic Heroes – Best
After talking about Sonic Heroes in Knuckle Chaotix. Sonic Heroes is the second best out of the whole franchise. Unlike the pervious, Sonic games it is a team-battle with 3 characters. I remember playing on original Xbox in 2004. The plot is about Sonic and other characters putting a stop to Eggman along with Metal Sonic in 3 days. While other characters like Team Rose, Team Dark and Team Chaotix have other agendas in place. In gameplay, each character has attributes such as power, fly and speed. Players can switch between at will to get through obstacles. Between levels, you see characters interact with each other in cutscenes. My favorite is Team Dark, which consist of Omega, Rouge the Bat and Shadow the Hedgehog.
I almost forgot about team attack they use. Team Chaotix was the funniest of all. Anyways, Sonic Heroes is available PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube. There was a rumor about a remake or sequel but was later debunked. Sonic Heroes elements and legacy lives on in other games. Team Sonic Racing has speed, power and fly mechanics, Generations has Metal Overlord boss fight and Seaside Hill appeared in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.

That’s all folks for my best and worst games I played in Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. I have played Sonic Advance, Dr. Robotnix’s Mean Bean Machine and Sonic Mania. Along with Sonic Racing franchise like CrossWorlds and Transformed. There are some sonic fighting games like Fighters and Battle on Gameboy Advance. Sonic the Hedgehog has always been in my heart, but I didn’t grew up with Sega Genesis. Later on, I have a Sega Dreamcast and loved it.
