Total Drama Island
Total Drama Island is an animated mockumentary reality TV show developed by Jennfier Pertsch and Tom McGillis. This is part of ongoing Total Drama series and released on July 8, 2007. Total Drama Island won a lot of awards from “Viewer’s Choice” to “Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program Series”. The plot takes place in Canada, an eccentric game show host named Chris Mclean that create a reality show called “Total Drama”. Chris is the narrator of the show and breaks the fourth wall as well. He recruits contestants to his reality series and give them challenges to see who win crash prize and become famous. Contestants consist of teens such as Gwen (a goth girl), Owen , Heather and Duncan. Each of them has an agenda for winning the contest. Total Drama has a cult following and I can see why a lot of people love it.
Anyways, Total Drama was inspired by MTV and VH1 reality shows along with Survivor. Each character talk in front of the camera, venting about the competition. Some competitors form alliance or use deception to win the show. Chris creates challenges for competitor and sometimes rigged them (which annoys or question by characters). Sometimes, competitor split into teams like “Screaming Gophers” and “Killer Bass” in certain challenges. The challenges ranges from gross to embarrassing that test competitors’ wits and skills. Throughout the course of the show, there is romance, betrayal and different shenanigans. Chris is not alone in these challenges, there is chef Hatchet (an ex-military man) who is a foil to him. I have watched the show for first time this week and enjoyable show. I love elimination segment with marshmallows and loser gets kick off the show.

There is an episode where they focus on the losers and what happen to them. My favorite characters are Owen, Izzy (she talk too much), Jeff (I would hang out with him) and Harold. Each episode makes me want more and see what happens next. There are some scenes that make me laugh out loud and adult humor not suited for younger audiences. The character design does reminds of Clone High (another good show) and Dexter Laboratory. Total Drama have other locations such as Camp, Movie Set (season two) and more. Due to the success of Island, Total Drama spawned many seasons along with a reboot. My final thoughts of the show, I love character interactions of the show. You got your tween stereotypes like goth, nerdy and jock all into one show.
Chris Mclean always get the contestants a hard time with his challenges. Elimination ceremony where Chris gives characters Marshmellow but if someone didn’t get one, they’re out of the island. Some contestants come back for a challnge or two. Chef Hatchet is the cook and sometimes host challenges if Chris doesn’t appear. In the reboot, he plays a huge role. Contestants staying in stinky cabins with one male and other female like collage dorminatory. I am guessing their ages are 15-17 but Lashawna looks 20 and other than rest of them. Contestants seentheir days in Camp Wawanakwa which is located in Muskoka, Ontario. Last episode of Total Drama Island, Owen wins and share the prize money with everyone.
Closing
First season of Total Drama was a fun ride with early 2000s jokes and characters with personality that watchers would love. Due to success of Total Drama, there is a spin off like The Ridonculous Race (which is a parody of Amazing Race). There is Total Drama World Tour, Pahkitew Island and Action. This also include a crossover called Total Drama All-Stars, where every contestants who appear on series competes for the prize money. I want a Total Drama game on next gen consoles, please put it on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox along with PC. In this show, girls can go wild and boy can become man. Total Drama have 6 seasons, you can watch them in couple of weeks. I also forgot about Total DramaRama which is alternate universe were contestants from Island aged down to Toddlers whilw Chet Hatchet babysit them.
I can’t wait to see more of Total Drama series. This show is pure genius, and how engaging the show is. Also, certain characters are being saved from elimination and become antagonist in each series. Total Drama Island is way better than live action reality show ever was. If you want to a wacky animated satire reality show, Total Drama Island is right up your alley.
