Why Horror Movies are Not Scary to Me Anymore

Horror Movies In Its Prime

I been watching horror movies since the 1990s, but during my childhood I watched Bones (featuring Snoop Dogg), Ernest’s Scared and Casper. Basely, I didn’t grew up watching Child’s Play, Friday the 3th and Nightmare on Elm Street until later. Just in time for Halloween in 2025, I will be discussing horror movies that are not scary anymore to me. In the past, you go to a movie theater with your friends or family to watch horror movie. Horror movies are not recommended for younger audience because those little ones going to have nightmares for life. Which movie you prefer? For example, a group of teenagers trying to escape by changing their fate (Final Destination). How about getting a phone call from a serial slasher with a ghost mask (Scream).

A kid purchasing demonic doll that can possess human body and go on murder-spree (Child’s Play). Horror movie genre was peaked by 1960s because I wasn’t born yet. In 80s and early 2000s, slasher movies define horror genre and makes audience scream in terror. Everyone know about popular horror characters such as Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, who is brought the genre to life. How can I forget the awful sequels of these perspective properties along with spin-offs. Myself, I haven’t watch a lot of them lately. There is a fandom of the genre because writing, jump scares and main protagonists faces off against titular antagonists. When watching these movies, there is suspenseful music while antagonist slowly offs characters on screen.

Troupes of the Genre

Person of color always be the first to die (which movie The Blackening explains). Someone falls went running from the Killer and end of dead. Female character have a love interest and villain always have backstory or motive behind their murders. I could name more but its been years, since some slasher film. Not all horror films, don’t revolve about killing someone but can be lighthearted. For example, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of my favorite and its a musical as well. Rocky Horror Picture Show is about two newlyweds Janet Weiss and Brad Majors find themselves in a mansion after car trouble. Mansion is run by Frank N Furter (Tim Curry), who is a scientist from Transylvania. Tim Curry performance is dazzling and empowers LGBTQ community as well. There is a remake featuring Laverne Cox called “Do the Time Wrap Again”.

Rocky Horror Picture Show stray away from Slasher troupe along with Hocus Pocus as well. Hocus Pocus is about three witches called “Sanderson sister” who trying to become immortal. The movie is not a slasher but made for younger audience with some comedy sticks. Due to that success Hocus Pocus 2 was released in 2022, it was average movie but love original. There is other movies that doesn’t have slasher troupe, I can name couple of it such as Nightmare Before Christmas, The Addam’s Family and Ghostbusters. Normally, I want something new and original because fans will catches these troupes. There is nothing anybody can do because troupes are everywhere in multiple genres of media.

Why Horror Movies Don’t Scare Me

As rightful adult, horror movies don’t scare me went I was kid. I have seen some horror flicks such as M3gan, Saw (for the first time) and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Technology has change from 1960s and past decades, I felt that filmmakers is missing something that draws in core crowd back. The classic troupe is still there but don’t have the same impact in the past. I am not saying that they’re bad but if right producer like Jordan Peele with Get Out. Horror genre would be steer in the right direction, but I am no expert on this. In my opinion, I love the past horror films then nowadays because creative bones put into them. Still, I don’t know difference between B or A horror movie really is. I have seen a lot of vampires, Frankenstein and werewolves in my time. Anyways, these movies spawn video games, TV shows and have a convention based on horror.

I did remember Fright Fest at Six Flags and 31 days of Halloween on ABC Family block. Halloween is my least favorite holiday. I understand people enjoy the holiday because during your childhood, there is candy. Sometimes eating too much candy is not good for the body because of too much sugar. Research it for yourself, but back to subject, horror genre is also available in video games as well. Do you guys know about Dead by Daylight because it features horror icons from past and present. Some of them make appearance in other games like Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty and Fortnite. You can also, see them internet memes and cartoon references like Scary Terry ( Rick N Morty). There are direct-to-video horror films like Halloween Town which aired on Disney Channel in 1998. How can forgot about sub-genres that con-jointed with horror like Scfi.

Closing

For example, The Lawnmower Man is a science fiction horror about cyberspace and virtual reality. Action plays apart of horror Alien franchise (I have to watch Hulu’s Earth) in the future. Predator is another horror/action hybrid that I have recently watch along with Killer of Killers. I am aware of Army of Darkness, IT and The Black Phone movies. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is another one I watched 1 years ago before the game was released. Horror genre is a hit or miss for me but there is nothing wrong with jump scares. Before, I end this, I have watched Sinners as well. Try not to watch horror flicks late ate night alone, what your thoughts on horror culture?
