Wicked 2024 Movie Analysis
Wicked 2024 movie is based off 2003 stage musical and Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. The movie is a reimagining of The Wizard of OZ that stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and many more. Directed by Jon M. Chu who brought you movies like Crazy Rick Asians and In the Heights. The plot takes during end of original Wizard of Oz went Dorothy Cale defeat Wicked Witch of the West. People in Munchkinland celebrate as Gilinda the Good Witch explains why Wicked Witch of the West turn evil. Galinda (which was first name during backstory) was the most popular student in Shiz University. She meets Elphaba Thropp (The Wicked Witch of the West) and first hated her due to her appearance. Later on, befriends Elphaba throughout the movie after a ball.
Elphaba upbringings was filled with torment because she was born green. Her father Governor Thropp was ashamed to have a green-skinned daughter. Elphaba has a wheelchair bound sister named Nessarose Thropp (later on The Wicked Witch of the East). While in Shiz University, she displays magic that catch Madame Morrible attention. This opens the door for her to meet The Wizard as one of the songs goes. During her time in Shiz, Elphaba meets Fiyero Tigelaar (later will be Scarecrow). The two saves a lion club (Cowardly Lion in the future) due to Shiz history with animals as Dr. Dillamond explains in his class.
Glinda is Not Good
Glinda other hand uses Boq Woodsman (Tin Man), even he has a crush on her. Boq asks Nessarosa to the dance but turn his back on Glinda. Glinda loves Fyero, leaving Boq heartbroken and relieve as well. She displays jealously for Elphaba for getting attention from Morrible. Due to Elphaba’s influence, Morrible gave her a training wand and felt remorse. Even Galinda keeps a straight face and maybe plan on using her as well. While going to Emerald City to meet the Wizard, Elphaba know how to read Grimmerie spellbook and finds out the truth from Morrible and Wizard. In my opinion, I think Glinda knew the truth as well. There is a reason why Glinda stays behind, while Elphaba files off to the distance.
In my opinion, Glinda and Morrible along The Wizard are villains in this story. While Elphaba is the protagonist and good in the inside. In her life, Elphaba has been lied to and used by people she meets. In past, The Wizard of Oz movies, cartoon and literature, Glinda was often portrayed as good one and Elphaba the evil witch. Galinda might have good intentions on befriending Elphaba or using her for personal gain. Right now, Glinda can’t use magic right now but in part 2. She will be a foil to Elphaba and fulfill that role of the good witch. In my opinion, I love this movie and love the twist on how past characters of The Wizard of Oz are portrayed. Again, I have seen The Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland which is classic. I wonder they will ever touch up on her weakness against water.
Closing
I am excited for Wicked for Good coming on November 21, 2025. Wicked 2024 was the best musical film I ever seen since Little Shop of Horror with Rick Moranis. I really felt sorry for Elphaba for people not accepting and fear her due to green skin. Later on, people took a liking to Elphaba but due her coup. The folks of Oz would hate her again and will command the flying monkeys. Don’t worry flying monkey will betray The Wizard and side with Elphaba in part 2. The soundtrack is very pleasant to listen to and my favorite is “The Wizard and I”. Glinda, The Wizard and Morrible is no saint and got a hand in turning Elphaba wicked. Now Elphaba is all alone in land of OZ and how is perspective will change for the squel.
Regrudly, I think Elpgaba will turn evil due to betrayal of Morrible and The Wizard. Glinda is no saint ever because she will become the good witch. Remember that everyone is scared of this green skinned witch because how different she is. Remember Naruto was a outlast before turning into Konoha’s Hokage. Hopefully, the sequel will tell us more about Elphaba path to become the Wicked Witch. Her sister will suffer the same fate as Elphaba in the sequel. We will see if Dorothy Gale will defeat the Elphaba and Glinda will be less happy unlike 1939 film. . Let me know what you think of Wicked 2024 film in the comment below.
