Who are Okarun and Momo Ayase?
Okarun and Momo Ayase are main protagonists of Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandandan manga. Momo Ayase is a gyaru high school who believes in the supernatural. Her powers are aura which she can visualize people’s spirit energy and form giant hands. Okarun (Ken Takakura), is a shy boy who loves supernatural just as Momo does. In episode 1 and beginning of the manga, Momo and Okarun became friends. Even Momo Ayase was surprised that Okarun is the real name is same as her celebrity crush. After Okarun saving Momo from Serpo, the two shared a friendship also living her Momo’s grandmother Seiko’s house. The two major characters fight against other aliens, yokai and other supernatural beings. I also forgot about Okarun having a strong sense of justice and has Turbo Granny’s power as well.
During the course of season 1, Momo and Okarun act like siblings by arguing. When Momo every in danger, Okarun transforms and defeats the enemy like Evil Eye in season two. Speaking of season two, Okarun and Momo Ayase relationship develops in the series. When Momo stops Tsuchinoko and thought he died, thanks to Chiquittia. Okarun was okay and thanks Momo for coming back to him. Afte Evil Eye arc, Momo finds a part-time job at a Maid Café. Momo’s friends drag Okarun as much his protest. Okarun offers to walk Momo home, she denies it. When 10:00pm arrives, Momo looks around and Okarun arrives to walk her home as much her delight. Both of them hold hands and walk home in peace.
Momo Ayase’s Love Competition
Momo has a lot of competition went it comes to Okarun. There is a some of female characters that trying to win affection for Okarun. First one was Aira Shiratori, who goes to the same high school as Okarun and Momo. She started as antagonist for Momo Ayase, who spread lies about her. In season 1, Aira meets her mother and almost died during the fight against Acrobatic Silky. Okarun and Momo save her and Aira is now a part of the group. Aira is a self-proclaim leader and has a huge crush on Okarun calling him “master”. Shiratori acquires the power of Acrobatic Silky just like Okarun’s Turbo Granny powers. Aira becomes a foil to Momo and two constantly argue went it comes to leadership. Shiratori is another character that tries to win Okarun over.
Another character is Vamola, she is an alien from another planet after being invaded. Vamola wears a Kaiju suit which can grow in size and become invisible. After Okarun’s group defeated her, she wakes up and joins the group. Vamola doesn’t know about human language but goes to earth to seek a mate. During the end of season two, Vamola wakes up and kisses Okarun, while Momo recovers from Kaiju fight. I hope we see more Vamola in season three and rest of the manga. I don’t know if this character has a crush on Okarun but she cares for him. Her name is Rin Sawaki, she is class representative in Okarun homeroom in school. Later on, during season two, Momo, Kinta and Okarun go after Golden Ball.
Okarun’s Love Rival
Rin defended Okarun and clash with Momo about him going somewhere. Later on, Rin developed gravity manipulation and love vampires. I haven’t read the manga in a while, but Rin might be a contender. As for Okarun has a rival named Jin Enjoji aka Jiji. Jiji is a childhood friend of Momo Ayas, who teased her during school. Towards the end of season 1, episode 12, Jiji has return and Okarun was not happy. Enjoji and Okarun becomes friends. Okarun does ponder about Enjoji relationship with Momo, whether he has a crush on her. Even Enjoji ask Momo during season two about “does she like anybody”, and she denies it. Whether Jiji has feelings for Momo or not, Okarun would win her affection by any means. If Momo and Enjoji ever dated, Okarun would be sadden or heartbroken at the same time.
I don’t know any other guys who loves Momo. Kinta Sakata is not one of them because he loves giant robots like Gundam. Anyways back to Jiji, went he was possessed by Evil Eye and Okarun called him out to fight. It’s like Okarun and Jiji is fighting over Momo Ayase in episode 7. Giving Evil Eye a condition to fight Okarun only instead of people like Momo, he agrees to the terms. We will have to find out whether Okarun and Enjoji will fight over Momo again. Okarun wants to get stronger with the help of Turbo Granny. I believe Okarun and Momo will become a couple by the end of the manga. First, they have to share a kiss before that. Hopefully, no other obstacle would come their way on their relationship. Who knows, they might get married and have children.
Why I Love Momo Ayase
Overall, Momo Ayase is one of my favorite female characters in anime. I will do a top 5 female anime characters post in the near future. Okarun and Momo are made for each other because their love of supernatural phenomena. If Momo wouldn’t met Okarun, I don’t know how their lives would become. Okarun would still be a loner, and Momo would find somebody else she likes. I love how awkwardly trying to look for each other. These two are the best anime couple in history.
