What is Comic Book Men?
Comic Book Men is a reality/podcast tv show developed by Kevin Smith. Kevin Smith is known for being avid comic book fan and started in a film “The Clerks”. Later on, directed Jay and Silent Bob along with He-Man Masters of the Universe (2021) tv show. The show is located in Red Bank, New Jersey, the plot of the show is about four male characters named Walt Flanagan, Bryan Johnson, Ming Chen and Mike Zapcic. Four guys worked at Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash which is from Jay and Silent Bob movies. While Kevin Smith doesn’t appear in Secret Stash himself but talks to main cast in Podcast style studio. Four guys tell Kevin Smith what happens on a day-to-day basis. For example, going to garage sale to pick up comic books along with dealing customers.
There are some guest appearances such as Jay actor Jason Mewes along with other celebrity guests that come to Kevin Smith Secret Stash. Meanwhile, major cast members get another some bickering with each other and other antics. For example, Ming and Bryan is like a comedy duo and sometimes roast each other. Despite that all the cast members have a great chemistry with each other. Customers come to the Secret Stash to sell their items from popular culture such as comics, horror movies and older tv shows. One of the four main cast negotiate prices based on their worth and condition it’s in. Customers think the items is worth thousands of dollars based on their purchase. Sometimes Comic Book Men have to call an expert like Rob Bruce to analysis it.
Holy Nerdom Batman
Comic Book Men geeks out of seeing Batman, The Six Million Dollar Man and other popular culture figures. Even one customer in season 1 brought a 1960s Batmobile along with crowl mask as well. The main characters do mention Comic Con, cosplaying and facts about comic creators like George Perez. In season 1, Walt did mention about Donald Trump can buy children like Bruce Wayne which was relevant to this day. During, podcast segment that Kevin Smith asks what is your favorite Godzilla monster and who in the comic world would you hangout with. In the show, you get to see pocket book based on DC and Marvel Comics. Some of these items can from 1960 to the present, which I find fascinating. Yes, I am a blerd that doesn’t buy a lot of comic books myself but respect those who does.
Some customers got their hands on autograph art from original creator but turn out to be fake. Even Walt stated that because people at comic book conventions resell them and tried to replicate them to think they’re real. Four main characters go on outings like restaurants and play hockey. Also, shooting a commercial to boost sells and get more customers to come buy at Secret Stash. All I have to say Comic Book Men is a breath of fresh air for nerds like me. I have already collected some comics if you want to read that article. There are figures along with toys like Chucky appeared in the show. Myself, I mainly in anime, superheroes, pop culture and others. I highly doubt that they don’t know about anime or manga.
Should Comic Book Men Comeback?
In my personal, Comic Book Men would be amazing if they came back to tv. Nowadays, there are digital comics and indie creators as well. Did you know that voice actor Zeno Robinson or A.J. Beckles wanted to a Comic Book Men like show? I heard it was a Kickstarter, but we didn’t know status of the show yet. They can invite influencers or content creators to the Secret Stash. Kevin Smith is still going con appearance and eating healthy vegan food. I am happy he is in good health after having a heart attack on February 25, 2018, but Secret Stash has been closed down in January 2009. Even Smith stated that Comic Book Men was cancelled on June 24, 2018. I don’t know if the chance of making a return is slim.
The show was part of AMC which The Walking Dead another comic book property was stationed on. The Walking Dead comics were in a background in season 1 at Secret Stash at one point. Anyways, comic books have evolved after the show ended along with movies and tv shows based on them like Invincible. Kevin Smith still talks about Peacemaker along with MCU in his own podcast. If there is a way to bring the show back, they will have to go online or buy another property. Nowadays, the economy is very expensive right now due the current administration. Overall, I really love the show despite critic “a little boring”, I have learned about different lore about comic book characters.
Closing
