Top 5 Anime and Manga Story Arcs – That Change the Series
Anime and Manga Story Arcs
In years, I have seen some anime and manga story arcs in my time. These storylines that manga artists make the reader go wow. What about anime watchers? Yes, you get a taste of that humble story arc pie. Some story arcs are very iconic and still talk about this day. There is some popular anime with amazing story arcs like Dragon Ball, Naruto and Chainsaw Man. I have some favorites on this list, so I hope you stay tuned for. These story arcs have character development, deaths and in-depth animation. I will be talking about some my favorite anime and manga story arcs of all time like WatchMojo style. Whether you’re a manga reader or anime watcher, these arcs will change your life. Without further ado, I will get to the one from 1990s during Toonami era.
YuYu Hakusho – Dark Tournament Arc
Dark Tournament story arc is my personal favorite in Yuyu Hakusho series. Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara along with Genkai comes to demon realm for a fighting tournament called “Dark Tournament”. This was part of season 2, went Younger Toguro and Yusuke Urameshi cross paths in the parking garage. Toguro tells him to join Dark Tournament, or he will kill his friends. Yusuke trains with Genkai as three participants Hei, Kuwabara and Kurama. Team Urameshi faces off against other demons and makes allies along the way. There is a history between Genkai and Toguro which led to the death of her. Yusuke successfully defeated Younger Toguro and won the Dark Tournament. All I have to say its one of the best arcs that Togashi has ever written. There is a PS2 video game based on it as well.
Rurouni Kenshin – Kyoto Arc
This is another story arc I like because one of the main antagonists of Kyoto storyline Makoto Shishio is my favorite villain. Kyoto story arc is about Kenshin Himura is tasked with defeating Makoto Shishio from talking over Japanese Government. Kaoru, Yahiko and Sanosuke go to Kyoto to find Kenshin after he abandons them. We learn more about Kenshin’s past like his teacher Hiko Seijuro. We have a new character, Miso Makimachi who is a part of Oniwabanshu group like Shinomori Aoshi. Kenshin and these friends face Ten Swords (Juppongatana) and Shishio himself. This story arc is amazing and I love the final battle with Kenshin vs Shishio. Even live action movie adapted this story along with 2023 reboot as well.
Bleach – Arrancar Arc
If you’re a Bleach anime watcher, then it’s from season 6 and 13 because Zanpakuto filter arc. I think Arrancar story arc is better than Thousand Year Blood War going on right now. The story begins after Ichigo and his friends rescue Rukia from being executed. Aizen leads an army of Arrancar (which are Hollows and Human hybrids. Throughout the arc, Ichigo and other train for the battle. Along with 13 Squad of Soul Society facing these new threats. Ichigo meets allies like Nelliel Tu Oderschvanck in Hueco Mundo. His goal is to rescue Orhime and defeat Aizen. Arrancar story arc has a lot of character development and get to see your favorite squad captain and lieutenants fight against Arrancar. These were some amazing battles in my opinion alone.
Zatch Bell – Thousand-Year-Old Mamodo Arc
This is from season two of Zatch Bell, which expands on Kiyo and other characters go to South America to stop Zofis from resurrection of thousand-year-old mamodos. Kiyo along with Megumi, Folgore and Sunbeam fight off Zofis’s followers. Sherry and Brago (which I love their fight against mamodos), want to defeat Zofis. Sherry’s childhood friend, Koko, is brainwashed by Zofis in season 1 in flashback. This story has comedy, sadness and heartfelt battles. Zatch (Gash) meets some allies that were forced to fight for Zofis. I like the fight between Demolt and Zofis crying went Brago give him the talk. Penny is stalking Zatch because his memory was erased by Zeno Bell. Konjiki no Gash is one of the anime that influenced me to become a better person. I really wanted a reboot of the anime so bad.
Yugioh Duel Monster – Duelist Kingdom Arc
I know that I haven’t watched Yugioh Dual Monster in a very long time. Right now, anime is still going on after original creator Kazuki Takahashi passed away. Duelist Kingdom story arc is very interesting because main characters Joey Wheeler, Yugi Muto, Tea Garnder and Tristan Taylor face off other duelists. There are some that were introduced like Mai Valentine, Bandit Keith and Wevil Underwood. I remember Joey and Yugi duel. Maximillion Pegasus uses his millennium eye to trap people (I am not sure, let me know in the comments). Kaiba vs Yugi gets their rivalry match up. This story is what makes YuGiOh great and remember watching it on KidsWB.

That’s all the story arc that I enjoy but there are some mentions like Hunter X Hunter Chimera Ant Arc. One Piece’s Wano Arc and Hitman Reborn Varia arc.
