Until Dawn (2015) – What is Butterfly Effect Meaning
What is Until Dawn (2015) Butterfly Effect?
Supermassive Games’s Until Dawn (2015) has a butterfly effect system which allows players to make decisions that will affect the game’s story. Also, storyline and character relationship change throughout course of the game. Butterfly effect originated in 1800, when Johann Gottlieb Fichte stated that “you couldn’t remove a single grain of sand its place without thereby changing something throughout all parts of the immeasurable whole”. Meaning, you can’t have a happy ending without making a decision without sacrificing someone to do it like Chris choose to save Josh or Ashely in Blackwood Mountain.
In 1950, Alan Turing says that “The displacement of the single electron by a billionth of a centimetre at the one moment might make the difference between a man being killed by an avalanche a year later or escaping”. In the prologue, Beth and Hanna escape from unknown assailant and the player has to choose between letting again of Beth or both fall to their deaths. The game uses Edward Norton Lorenz ‘s weather model because main characters are trapped in snowstorm at Blackwood Mountain. During main story, our main characters return to the lodge after Josh’s sisters Beth and Hanna passed away after prank go wrong. This event triggered butterfly effect leading out main cast members on each other’s throats.

There is assailant who wants revenge on Washington family along with major characters in the game. Lorenz talks about one flap from a seagull that alters the course of the weather forever. While one decision will lead to another and also cause domino effect as well. Which Until Dawn has tackles domino effect, like recent murders of some of the major cast and finding clues to get closer to the truth. Dr. Hill (Peter Stomare), questions about what your biggest fears is and who you dislike. His role in the game is completely mysterious but act as a overseer in the game. During gameplay, each character finds totems which represent guidance, death, fortune and more.
How Did Your Decision Affect the Game?
Until Dawn (2015) makes players decided what is the best outcome for that character without altering sacrifice someone. For example, Mike (Brett Dalton) and Jessica (Meaghan Martin) were running from unknown assailant. The player has to choose whether to get the key to the cabin and leave Jess or save her. This is a what if scenario, if Jess dies, the storyline will change and Mike will feel guilty for not saving her. If Mike and Jess will both be saved at once. Again, domino effect that Jess will get kidnapped in the end by the assailant. Supermassive Games make the game force player’s hand and what will you do in that situation.
For example, if you play cards, a player will have to force other person’s hand to decide whether to win or lose the game. Until Dawn game is known for decision-making and making players think on their feet. Which I really enjoy as a whole and look at the characters in a whole new lens. Also, put yourself in characters’ shoes on what action you can take. Finding totems that look to see what even will happen next, trigging domino effect. There are many possibilities to uncover the truth behind events of Blackwood Mountain. Lorenz talks about predictability, which player picks up totems and shows what is going to happen.

During, climax the game, Josh turns out to be masked man that attack, Sam (late Hayden Panettiere), Chris (Noah Fleiss) and Ashley (Galadriel Stineman) in middle of the game. Along with Hannah being a wendigo and surviving the fall. These events might change based on player’s decision. I really enjoy Until Dawn (2015) because you are putting yourself in horror movie. Personally, I don’t watch a lot of horror films because they don’t scare me. I will give it to Supermassive Games to bring me back to playing interactive movies games like Detroit Become Human and Fahrenheit. Motion control is a nice touch making players stay still and Resident Evil style camera work. Did you know, there was a remake released on October 24, 2025, featuring new soundtrack, graphic and third-person perspective.
