Platform Fighters Vs Traditional Fighters – What is the Differences
Platform Fighters
Platform fighters are about two or more characters fighting in a arena with hazards along with platforms. These characters have to knock each other off platform to win the match. For example, Nintendo’s greatest hit Super Smash Bros series, the game features all-star Nintendo characters like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Kirby and many more, duking it out to see what is the best. Due to the success of Smash Bros franchise, there were a lot of clones in the mix like Brawhalla, Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl, Multiversus and Rivals of Arther.

In platform fighters, there is no quarter circle like traditional fighters. There are different attacks like neutral, special and charge, depending on the game. Players must toggle button in any direction, for example up special can keep you from falling off the edge of the stage. Down special can access unique abilities like Nickelodeon All-Star Bawl, the Angry Beavers, which Dagget and Norb can switch places. In terms of platform fights, each character plays like fighting game archetypes like big characters like Donkey Kong is slow and powerful based his size.
Just like traditional fighting games, you can perform combos called “strings”, this term is stringing neutral attack to power attack, henceforth knocking your opponent off the screen. Traditional fighting games have only two players on the screen but platform has up to 4 or 8 players at once. Don’t forget supers that some platform games have like Smash Bros, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and more. Some platform fighters get repetitive and hard to stand because Super Smash Bros format. There are some like Layup Legends and Lethal League which are not fighting games.
Traditional Fighters
Traditional fighters are more grounded than platforms, Street Fighter is pioneer of that genre. In traditional, you have to get your opponent’s health bar to zero. Street Fighter has improved more in terms of gameplay like parry, drive rushes and many more. Especially, 2D fighting games, which have super moves, overkill (Guilty Gear) or fatalities (Mortal Kombat). Players have to perform moves during motions like quarter-circle. Some like 2XKO, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls and DNF Duel have some motion like Super Smash Bros. Traditional has archetypes as well like grapplers, zoners and well-rounded characters.
These types of fighting games are meant for veterans, but nowadays, game developers have made it easier for beginners to get into fighting games. There is modern control and auto combos that were implemented in the game. I remember Capcom vs SNK 2 EO had option to use one of the analog sticks to perform moves. Combos can be a challenge as well, if you get the timing right. Some people will spend hours in training mode to perfect a certain character based on their frame data.

Traditional has some defense options just like platformers have. For example, dodging, shielding and many more to stop you from getting damage. While traditional has health bar, platform has percentage (the higher its, more like you will be fly across the screen). Losing your health means K.O. and that person has won the match. Both platform and traditional fighters play similar to one another. Each of them has their pros and cons depending on which title you play. There are some platform or traditional fighter games on Steam, Switch, PS5 along with Xbox.
Thoughts on Platform or Traditional Fighters
Platform is sort of for beginners than traditional fighter ever be. There are tutorials on how to be good at platform and traditional fighters. The rest is you can have to learn on your own how to do combos and find how character works. A lot of people hate fighting games in general because how difficult to be good at it without getting infinite combo. There is two types of players casual and professional. Casual players are not really good at the game but want to have fun with it like myself. Professional players spend hours learning combos and playing in esports tournaments around the world.

I have seen pros be profession in fighting games along with platform one as well. Fighting games in general take time to master. Whether you play rank or causal in online matches or offline. Fighting games is always to be top 10 video game genres in history. Some people might rage quit, if match is not going their way or create a lobby to face your friends in series of sets. I like fighting games and willing to become good at them in the near future. What do I think of platform or traditional fighters? Personally, I have played both and these are not bad at all.
Closing
I have to admit that I am no way good at them but there is a difference between the two. There are some best and worst ones in the market today. These two play differently but still count as a fighting game. What your thoughts on platform fighter’s vs traditional fighter? Let me know in the comments and thank you for reading this blogpost.
