Killing Bites Anime – What are Therianthrope and Zaibatsu
What is Killing Bites?
Killing Bites anime is based on manga by Kazuasa Sumita and Shinya Murata. The plot is about college student named Yuya Nomoto, who witness his friends kidnapped Hitomi Uzaki. Hitomi is a therianthrope who has dna of ratel and kills Yuta’s friends. Yuya and Hitomi goes into a jukeyard is about to kill Nomoto. Next thing, a lion therianthrope named Yugo Tani defeats him. Hitomi’s creator named Reiichi Shido assigns Yuya as her guardian.
While Hitomi acts as Nomoto’s bodyguard and protects him from other therianthropes. Throughout the 12 episodes series, Hitomi fights off other brutes from Zaibatsus to protect Yuya. In early in the series, Reiichi gives us overall summary of the story and terminology. Such as therianthrope which are human infuse with animal dna and transform at will.
Just like Bloody Roar Zoanthrope and from fantasy novel lycanthrope, each characters have different animal dna. For example, Nakanishi siblings Eruza is a cheetah hybrid and Taiga more like a tiger. Ui Inaba is a rabbit, Ichinosuke transform into Hippopotamus along with Ryuji Shiina really a Crocodile brute.
Different Zaibatsu and Roles
Therianthrope has traits and abilities from species just like Takeshi Kido who is a Pangolin brute from Mitsukado Zaibatsu who uses his shell for defense. Some of Therianthrope can partially transform into their animal form, during end of the series, Hitomi can reach full form of her Ratei. Other than that, my explanation of Therianthrope.
As Reiichi explains there are four Zaibatsu such as Ishida, Yatsubishi, Mitsukado and Sumitomo. Each Zaibatsu is an organization full of sponsors and investors that has brutes to fight for them. For example, Hitomi belongs to Ishida Zaibatsu, Dem Onuma is apart from Sumitomo, Jerome Hongo goes to Mitsukado and Kaori Rikujo is the center of Yatsubishi.
During mid-episodes of Killing Bites anime, a group of Zaibatsu give brutes orders and watch fighting tournament called “Destoryal” which team battle royale to see who last person standing. At the end of the tournament, the head of Mitsukado, Yoko has been assassinated by Reiichi and other Zaibatsu. Zaibastu is more like overseers and use their power to get what they want.
Thoughts on Killing Bites
Even if anime series ended but manga is still ongoing. I don’t know if we get season two anytime soon. Zaibatsu reminds me of Tekken’s Mishima Zaibatsu which is run by Heihachi. That name stuck in my head but anyways, there is corruption in Zaibatsu to change society. In my opinion, Reiichi Shido will be main antagonist in Killing Bites and Nomoto will get his revenge on him. After end of episode 12, Hitomi kills Nomoto but survives and trains two Therianthropes to take down Reiichi.
Nomoto is now a Crow Therianthrope along with Kuroi and Inui. He still have feeling for Uzuki and want to free her from Reiichi’s influence. But you have to reach the manga to see what happens next.Killing Bites is very generic shonen story with one of the major characters dies. Uzuki says saying “the one with the sharper fangs wins, that’s killing bites”, went she prepare for a battle. Her special move “Slash”, which she finishes off her opponent. Killing Bites does have fanservice during opening and ending of the anime.
This show is not intended for younger audiences but adults. The anime has some filler but stick with overall story. It was animated by Liden Films who did Berserk (2006), Tokyo Revengers and Rurouni Kenshin (2023 reboot). There was a video game by Nex Entertainment, but it was cancelled, and I heard Killing Bites is spiritual successor to Bloody Roar.
Closing
One day, I am hoping for Bloody Roar reboot or remake, but Konami got to do something. Hitomi Uzuki needs to be a guest character or dlc. OMG, I got some ideas about a new Bloody Roar game soon. Back to Killing Bites, Yuya Nomoto was the weakest protagonist in the series. But I felt sorry for him because he was a victim of a crime. During time skip, he does grow stronger from time to time.
Killing Bites is not a bad series but average at best. If you’re a fan of Bloody Roar fighting game. I would check out this series in manga or anime form. We do get a backstory on Hitomi and Reiichi relationship in episode 10 “Let’s Go Together”. Also, we find out more about Hitomi’s origin beast form in Hong Kong.
